Why Resist-Refuse Cases Blow Up
Understanding Systems Saturation & the Child's Position in the Family System
Service Description
This training examines why many resist–refuse and high-conflict family cases become increasingly polarized despite the efforts of well-intentioned professionals. Rather than viewing these cases solely through an individual, trauma or behavioral lens, participants will learn to understand them as family systems operating under significant pressure. Using principles from systems theory, structural family therapy and strategic family therapy, this course explores how patterns of escalation, coalition formation, boundary disruption, role confusion and chronic conflict influence both children and adults. Participants will learn how family systems attempt to maintain stability, how maladaptive patterns become reinforced over time and why direct intervention strategies often produce unintended consequences. Special attention is given to understanding the child's position within high-conflict family systems. Participants will explore loyalty conflicts, emotional pressure, attachment dynamics, avoidance patterns and the ways children adapt to chronic family instability. The training will also examine how professional actions can unintentionally increase system pressure when intervention pacing does not match family readiness. Participants will learn practical concepts that can be applied across counseling, reunification therapy, parent coordination, custody evaluation and other court-involved roles. The course emphasizes stabilization, observation, assessment and thoughtful intervention planning rather than rapid problem-solving approaches that may increase resistance. This training is designed for mental health professionals seeking a deeper understanding of the systemic forces operating within complex family systems and provides a foundation for more effective, ethically sound decision-making in high-conflict cases. 3 Live CEU Hours • Live Interactive Webinar • Replay Access Included • Certificate of Completion Provided
